Cancer marker checks

What cancer-related checks are included?

CA125 testing for ovarian markers and FIT bowel screening, with results explained alongside the rest of your health check.

CA125 — Cancer Antigen 125

A blood test measuring CA125, a protein that can be raised in some women with ovarian cancer. CA125 can also rise for non-cancer reasons including endometriosis, fibroids, pelvic inflammatory disease, menstruation and pregnancy. Best discussed with a GP if elevated.

FIT — Faecal Immunochemical Test

A take-home stool test that detects hidden blood in the stool, which can be linked to bowel cancer and other bowel conditions. We post the kit to your address ahead of your appointment if you book in advance, or hand it to you on the day if not. Results within 5 working days of the lab receiving your sample.

These tests can help flag patterns but cannot diagnose or rule out cancer. CA125 and FIT screening are not a substitute for NHS cancer screening, GP assessment or specialist investigation. Raised results can happen for non-cancer reasons, and normal results do not rule out cancer. If you have symptoms or ongoing concerns, please speak to your GP.

More than cancer markers

A wider health check, with cancer markers included

Beyond the CA125 and FIT tests, this check includes a wider blood panel and in-clinic checks — giving a broader picture of your health.

From the lab

Blood test panel

A wider blood panel covering cholesterol, diabetes risk, liver and kidney function, thyroid function, inflammation, vitamin D, ferritin, bone & mineral, and blood health — plus the CA125 cancer marker.

  • Total Protein
  • Albumin
  • Globulin
  • Total Bilirubin
  • Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP)
  • ALT
  • AST
  • Gamma GT
Kidney & Electrolytes

Markers that can help flag patterns related to kidney function and fluid, electrolyte and mineral balance.

  • Sodium
  • Potassium
  • Urea
  • Creatinine
  • eGFR
Bone & Mineral

Calcium and phosphate are part of bone and mineral metabolism, and can help flag patterns relevant to kidney and parathyroid health.

  • Triglycerides
  • HDL Cholesterol
  • LDL Cholesterol
  • VLDL (Calculated)
  • Non-HDL Cholesterol
  • TC:HDL Ratio
  • HDL % of Total
Diabetes (HbA1c)

Average blood sugar measurement that can help flag possible type 2 diabetes or prediabetes risk.

  • HbA1c
  • HbA1c %
Thyroid Function

Helps flag patterns that may suggest underactive or overactive thyroid function, or autoimmune thyroid patterns, for discussion with your GP where needed.

  • Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH)
  • Free Thyroxine (Free T4)
  • Free Triiodothyronine (Free T3)

  • Cancer Antigen 125 (CA125)

On the day

In-clinic checks

ECG, blood pressure, body composition, urinalysis and lifestyle review — all explained during your appointment.

Heart
  • 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG). A 12-lead ECG measures your heart’s electrical activity, rhythm and rate, helping screen for rhythm patterns such as atrial fibrillation and other findings that may need GP follow-up.
  • Blood pressure. Checks for raised blood pressure, a leading risk factor for heart disease and stroke.
  • Resting heart rate. Measured during your ECG. An indicator of cardiovascular fitness.
  • Healthy heart age. Calculated from your data, with guidance on how to lower it.
  • Heart disease & stroke 10-year risk. A risk algorithm using your health and lifestyle data to estimate your risk.
Body composition
  • Body fat percentage. Compared against the ideal range for your age, gender, and build.
  • Basal metabolic rate (BMR). The energy your body needs at rest.
  • Estimated daily activity requirement. Your daily calorie need based on activity level.
  • Muscle and bone mass. Identifies risks linked to low body mass.
  • Hydration percentage. Whether you’re hydrated, dehydrated, or retaining excess water.
  • Waist-to-height ratio. A strong predictor of metabolic disease risk.
  • Ideal weight range. Personalised to your height, frame, and lean mass.
  • Body mass index (BMI). Interpreted alongside your body composition for context.
Lifestyle review
  • Lifestyle assessment. A structured review of your current routine and health goals.
  • Nutrition guidance. Practical, evidence-based advice — no fad diets.
  • Sleep hygiene. Why sleep matters and how to improve it.
  • Physical activity assessment. Tailored guidance to fit your schedule and preferences.
  • Type 2 diabetes 10-year risk. A risk algorithm using your health and lifestyle data to estimate your risk.
In-clinic
  • Urinalysis. Strip-test of your urine, with results given on the day.

Right for you?

Who this check is for

Best for

  • Women aged 40 or over wanting a wider health check that includes cancer marker testing
  • Women with a family history of ovarian or bowel cancer, or BRCA-related risk, who want additional private screening alongside appropriate NHS care
  • Women wanting CA125 testing alongside broader screening of heart, metabolic, thyroid and vitamin D health
  • Patients who want time with a trained Health Adviser, not just a blood test appointment

Consider a different option if

  • You have current gynaecological or bowel symptoms.

If you have persistent bloating, pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding, blood in your stool or unexplained weight loss, please see your GP first. The NHS can investigate symptoms more quickly and on an appropriate care pathway.

  • You don’t want cancer marker testing.

Our Optimal Health Check at £189 covers broader screening across heart, metabolic, thyroid and inflammation — without CA125 or FIT testing.

  • You want a wider hormone, thyroid antibody or vitamin panel instead.

If your priority is sex hormones, thyroid antibodies, fasting insulin, vitamin D, B12 and folate rather than cancer markers, our Comprehensive Blood Test at £299 is our widest blood-test-only package.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is this an NHS cancer screening test?
No. This is a private health check that includes CA125 ovarian marker testing and a FIT bowel screening test. It is not a replacement for NHS cancer screening, GP assessment or specialist investigation. If you’re eligible for NHS bowel cancer screening or other NHS programmes, we recommend continuing to participate.
What does a raised CA125 mean?
CA125 can rise for many reasons, not all of them cancer-related. Endometriosis, fibroids, pelvic inflammatory disease, ovarian cysts, menstruation, pregnancy and other conditions can all raise CA125. A raised result needs interpretation in the context of your age, history and any symptoms — best discussed with your GP, who can arrange further investigation if needed.
Does a normal CA125 or FIT result rule out cancer?
No. A normal CA125 or FIT result does not rule out cancer. Some cancers may not produce raised markers or detectable blood in the stool. If you have symptoms, a family history or ongoing concerns, please speak to your GP even if your results are normal.
Where can I read more about CA125 and FIT testing?
You can read NHS guidance on ovarian cancer (nhs.uk/conditions/ovarian-cancer) and bowel cancer screening (nhs.uk/conditions/bowel-cancer-screening) before booking. These pages explain the benefits and limitations of each test in more detail.
How does the FIT bowel screening test work?
FIT is a take-home stool test. Depending on how far ahead you book, we’ll either post the kit to your address before your appointment or hand it to you on the day. You collect a small sample at home, seal it in the supplied tube, and post it directly to the lab using the prepaid envelope. The lab tests for hidden blood in the stool, which can be linked to bowel cancer and other bowel conditions. Results come back within 5 working days of the lab receiving your sample.
Do I need to fast before my appointment?
No. No fasting is required for our health check packages, so you can eat and drink normally before your appointment.
How long does the appointment take?
Around 30 minutes from start to finish. Your Health Adviser performs the in-clinic checks, takes your blood sample, and gives you the FIT kit to take home.
When will I get my results?
Blood results within 2–5 working days. FIT bowel screening result within 5 working days of the lab receiving your stool sample. You receive a detailed report covering every marker in your panel and the FIT result, with clear explanations and guidance on when GP follow-up may be appropriate.
Who reviews my results?
Your Health Adviser has a sport science background, an MSc in Sport Psychology, and is Bupa-trained in health assessment. Blood results are reviewed against lab reference ranges, with clear explanations. If anything suggests medical follow-up, we will recommend you see your GP.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. Adults aged 18–79 can book directly.
I have gynaecological symptoms now. Should I book this?
If you have current symptoms — persistent bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, changes to your menstrual cycle, post-menopausal bleeding, or unexplained weight loss — please see your GP first. Health screening is for baseline testing and risk awareness, not diagnosis. A GP can arrange the right investigations for symptoms, often more quickly and on the NHS.
