What it checks

What does a liver function blood test check?

A liver function test (LFT) measures enzymes and proteins produced by the liver. Together, these markers help assess how well your liver is working and can flag patterns linked to liver stress, inflammation or reduced liver function.

Our liver panel includes 8 markers. The full panel is included in our Essential, Advanced and Optimal Health Checks. Cancer Marker checks include a shorter 6-marker liver panel.

  • Total Protein
  • Albumin
  • Globulin
  • Total Bilirubin
  • Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP)
  • ALT (Alanine Aminotransferase)
  • AST (Aspartate Aminotransferase)
  • Gamma GT (GGT)

What results may indicate

Understanding liver function results

Liver markers are most meaningful when read together. Mildly raised individual markers are common and often have non-serious causes.

ALT and AST

ALT and AST are liver enzymes that can rise when liver cells are inflamed or damaged. Raised levels can flag patterns linked to fatty liver, alcohol intake, certain medications or other liver conditions.

ALP and GGT

ALP and GGT can indicate issues with bile flow or liver enzyme activity. Raised GGT in particular is sometimes linked to alcohol intake or certain medications, though it can be raised for many other reasons.

Bilirubin

Bilirubin is a waste product processed by the liver. Raised levels can flag patterns linked to liver function issues, gallbladder problems or red blood cell turnover.

Albumin and proteins

Albumin, globulin and total protein give a picture of the liver’s synthetic function — how well it’s producing essential proteins. Low levels can support assessment of chronic liver issues, kidney issues or nutritional status.

Liver function blood tests are for screening and risk awareness, not diagnosis. Mildly raised markers are common and often resolve on repeat testing. If results suggest medical follow-up — or if you have current symptoms — please speak to your GP.

FAQ

Liver function blood test — frequently asked questions

Do I need a GP referral for a liver function blood test?
No. Adults aged 18–79 can book directly online, by phone or by email.
Do I need to fast before a liver function test?
No. The liver markers we use do not require fasting, so you can eat and drink normally before your appointment.
What does a liver function blood test include?
Our liver panel includes 8 markers: Total Protein, Albumin, Globulin, Total Bilirubin, Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP), ALT, AST and Gamma GT (GGT). The full panel is included in our Essential, Advanced and Optimal Health Checks.
How quickly will I get my liver results?
Your detailed blood test report is usually ready within 2–5 working days.
What if my liver results are raised?
Mildly raised liver markers can have many non-serious causes including alcohol intake, certain medications, recent intense exercise or fatty liver. Your report will explain results in context. If medical follow-up is needed, we will recommend you speak to your GP, who may arrange repeat testing or further investigation.
Can I just book a liver function test on its own?
Yes — single tests start from £99, with specialist tests priced higher. Many patients choose a health check package instead for better value, since the package includes a broader blood panel and on-the-day clinical checks at a similar price point.
