What it checks

What does a cholesterol blood test check?

A cholesterol blood test — sometimes called a lipid profile — measures different types of cholesterol and other fats in your blood. Together, these markers help build a picture of cardiovascular health and risk.

Our lipid profile includes 8 markers covering total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, non-HDL cholesterol, triglycerides and key ratios. The full panel is included in all of our health check packages.

  • Total Cholesterol
  • Triglycerides
  • HDL Cholesterol
  • LDL Cholesterol
  • Non-HDL Cholesterol
  • VLDL (Calculated)
  • TC:HDL Ratio
  • HDL % of Total

What results may indicate

Understanding cholesterol results

Cholesterol results are most meaningful when read together rather than as individual numbers. Here’s a plain-English guide to what each marker can suggest.

Total cholesterol

Total cholesterol gives a high-level view of cholesterol in the blood. It’s most useful when interpreted alongside HDL and LDL — high total cholesterol can flag patterns linked to increased cardiovascular risk.

HDL, LDL and non-HDL cholesterol

HDL is often described as the “protective” cholesterol; LDL is the type more strongly linked to fatty deposits in artery walls. Non-HDL cholesterol (total cholesterol minus HDL) captures all the “non-protective” cholesterol types in one figure and is increasingly used in cardiovascular risk assessment. Higher HDL and lower LDL/non-HDL generally support lower cardiovascular risk.

Triglycerides

Triglycerides are a type of fat in the blood. Raised levels can be linked to diet, alcohol intake, weight, diabetes risk and metabolic health more broadly.

Cholesterol ratios

TC:HDL ratio and HDL % of total help give context to your overall cholesterol picture, supporting assessment of cardiovascular risk alongside blood pressure, family history and lifestyle factors.

Cholesterol blood tests are for screening and risk awareness, not diagnosis. If results suggest medical follow-up — or if you have current symptoms — please speak to your GP, who can advise on lifestyle changes, retesting, or treatment if appropriate.

I recently had a health screening and was thoroughly impressed from start to finish. Joe immediately made me feel at ease. The entire appointment was extremely well organised and professional, yet never felt rushed. I couldn't recommend Optimum Health Screening highly enough.

FAQ

Cholesterol blood test — frequently asked questions

Do I need a GP referral for a cholesterol blood test?
No. Adults aged 18–79 can book directly online, by phone or by email.
Do I need to fast before a cholesterol test?
No. The lipid profile we use is non-fasting, so you can eat and drink normally before your appointment.
What does a cholesterol blood test include?
Our lipid profile includes total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, LDL, non-HDL cholesterol, VLDL (calculated), the TC:HDL ratio and HDL as a percentage of total cholesterol — eight markers in total.
How quickly will I get my cholesterol results?
Your detailed blood test report is usually ready within 2–5 working days.
What if my cholesterol results are raised?
Your report explains your results in context and highlights any markers outside the normal reference range. If medical follow-up is needed, we will recommend you speak to your GP, who can advise on lifestyle changes, retesting, or treatment if appropriate.
Can I just book a cholesterol test on its own?
Yes — single tests start from £99, with specialist tests priced higher. Many patients choose a health check package instead for better value, since the package includes a broader blood panel and on-the-day clinical checks at a similar price point.
