Two levels of thyroid testing

Basic thyroid function vs full thyroid panel

Not all thyroid tests are the same. We offer two levels of thyroid testing across our packages — basic thyroid function for general screening, and a full thyroid panel for more detailed investigation.

Optimal Health Check (£189)

Basic thyroid function

The two markers most commonly used by GPs to assess thyroid function. Suitable for general screening.

  • Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH)
  • Free Thyroxine (Free T4)
About the Optimal Health Check

Cancer Marker Checks (£249)

Full thyroid panel

Adds Free T3 (the more active hormone) and two thyroid antibodies that can flag autoimmune patterns.

  • Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH)
  • Free Thyroxine (Free T4)
  • Free Triiodothyronine (Free T3)
  • Thyroglobulin Antibody
  • Thyroid Peroxidase Antibody (TPO)

Thyroid testing is not currently included in our Essential or Advanced Health Checks.

Which packages include it

Thyroid testing in our packages

Three of our five packages include thyroid testing. The level of detail varies between basic and full panel.

Basic thyroid function

Optimal

£189

Includes basic thyroid function (TSH and Free T4), alongside hs-CRP inflammation, uric acid and our most comprehensive standard health check.

Full thyroid panel

Men’s Cancer Marker Check

£249

Includes the full 5-marker thyroid panel — TSH, Free T4, Free T3, Thyroglobulin Antibody and TPO Antibody — alongside PSA prostate testing and FIT bowel screening.

Full thyroid panel

Women’s Cancer Marker Check

£249

Includes the full 5-marker thyroid panel — TSH, Free T4, Free T3, Thyroglobulin Antibody and TPO Antibody — alongside CA125 testing and FIT bowel screening.

Single blood tests start from £99, with some specialist tests priced higher. For better value, many patients choose a health check package instead, which includes a broader blood panel, on-the-day checks and a clearer picture of their results.

What results may indicate

Understanding thyroid results

Thyroid markers are most meaningful when read together. Here’s a plain-English guide to what each measures.

TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone)

TSH is produced by the pituitary gland and signals your thyroid to make hormones. Raised TSH can flag patterns linked to an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism); low TSH can flag patterns linked to an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism).

Free T4 (Thyroxine)

Free T4 is the main hormone produced by your thyroid. Together with TSH, it helps build a fuller picture of thyroid function than either marker alone.

Free T3 (Triiodothyronine)

Free T3 is the more active form of thyroid hormone. It can help identify patterns where T4 is normal but symptoms persist. Free T3 is included in our full thyroid panel (Cancer Marker checks), not the basic panel (Optimal).

Thyroid antibodies

Thyroglobulin Antibody and Thyroid Peroxidase (TPO) Antibody can flag patterns linked to autoimmune thyroid conditions such as Hashimoto’s or Graves’ disease. These are included in our full thyroid panel only.

Thyroid blood tests are for screening and risk awareness, not diagnosis. Thyroid conditions are usually managed by a GP, who can arrange repeat testing, imaging or treatment if appropriate. If you have current symptoms, please speak to your GP.

I recently had a health screening and was thoroughly impressed from start to finish. Joe immediately made me feel at ease. The entire appointment was extremely well organised and professional, yet never felt rushed. I couldn't recommend Optimum Health Screening highly enough.

FAQ

Thyroid blood test — frequently asked questions

Do I need a GP referral for a thyroid blood test?
No. Adults aged 18–79 can book directly online, by phone or by email.
Do I need to fast before a thyroid test?
No. The thyroid markers we use do not require fasting, so you can eat and drink normally before your appointment.
What is the difference between a basic thyroid test and a full thyroid panel?
A basic thyroid test measures TSH and Free T4 — the two markers most commonly used by GPs to assess thyroid function. A full thyroid panel adds Free T3 (the more active form of thyroid hormone) and two thyroid antibodies (Thyroglobulin and TPO) that can flag patterns linked to autoimmune thyroid conditions. Our Optimal Health Check includes the basic panel; our Cancer Marker checks include the full panel.
Which package should I choose for thyroid testing?
If you’re looking for a general thyroid function check as part of a comprehensive screening, the Optimal Health Check at £189 is a strong choice. If you have a family history of thyroid disease, ongoing symptoms despite normal basic results, or want a broader view of possible autoimmune thyroid markers, the full thyroid panel in our Cancer Marker checks (£249) offers more depth.
How quickly will I get my thyroid results?
Your detailed blood test report is usually ready within 2–5 working days.
What if my thyroid results are abnormal?
Your report will explain the result in context and highlight markers outside the normal reference range. Thyroid conditions are usually managed by a GP, so we will recommend you speak to your GP if your results suggest medical follow-up.
Can I just book a thyroid test on its own?
Yes — single tests start from £99, with full thyroid panels and other specialist tests priced higher. Many patients choose a health check package instead for better value, since the package includes a broader blood panel and on-the-day clinical checks.
