What it checks

What does a full blood count check?

A full blood count (FBC) is one of the most commonly requested blood tests. It measures the cells in your blood — red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets — and can flag patterns linked to anaemia, infection, inflammation, immune-system activity or other blood-related conditions.

Our FBC includes 15 markers. The full panel is included in our Advanced, Optimal and Cancer Marker Health Checks. It is not currently included in the Essential package.

  • Haemoglobin
  • Red Blood Count
  • HCT (Haematocrit)
  • MCV (Mean Cell Volume)
  • MCH (Mean Cell Haemoglobin)
  • MCHC
  • RDW (Red Cell Distribution Width)
  • Platelets
  • MPV (Mean Platelet Volume)
  • White Cell Count
  • Neutrophils
  • Lymphocytes
  • Monocytes
  • Eosinophils
  • Basophils

Which packages include it

Full blood count in our packages

FBC is included in our Advanced Health Check upwards. The Essential Health Check does not currently include FBC — if FBC is important to you, the Advanced check at £155 is the most affordable option that includes it.

Advanced

£155

Includes the full 15-marker FBC, plus 12-lead ECG, urinalysis and comprehensive iron studies.

Optimal

£189

Includes the full 15-marker FBC alongside thyroid function, hs-CRP inflammation and our most comprehensive standard health check.

Men’s Cancer Marker Check

£249

Includes the full 15-marker FBC alongside PSA prostate testing and FIT bowel screening.

Women’s Cancer Marker Check

£249

Includes the full 15-marker FBC alongside CA125 testing and FIT bowel screening.

Single blood tests start from £99, with some specialist tests priced higher. For better value, many patients choose a health check package instead, which includes a broader blood panel, on-the-day checks and a clearer picture of their results.

What results may indicate

Understanding full blood count results

FBC markers are most meaningful when read together. Mildly out-of-range individual markers are common and often resolve on repeat testing.

Red blood cells and haemoglobin

Haemoglobin, red blood count, HCT, MCV, MCH, MCHC and RDW give a picture of red blood cell health. Low haemoglobin can flag patterns linked to anaemia; the supporting markers can help identify the type of anaemia (for example, iron deficiency vs B12 / folate deficiency).

White blood cells

White cell count and the differential breakdown (Neutrophils, Lymphocytes, Monocytes, Eosinophils, Basophils) can flag patterns linked to infection, inflammation, allergic responses, or other immune-system activity.

Platelets

Platelets and MPV reflect blood-clotting health. Out-of-range platelet counts can flag patterns linked to bleeding risk, inflammation or other underlying conditions.

Full blood count tests are for screening and risk awareness, not diagnosis. Mildly out-of-range results are common and often have non-serious explanations. If results suggest medical follow-up — or if you have current symptoms — please speak to your GP.

FAQ

Full blood count — frequently asked questions

Do I need a GP referral for a full blood count?
No. Adults aged 18–79 can book directly online, by phone or by email.
Do I need to fast before a full blood count?
No. The FBC does not require fasting, so you can eat and drink normally before your appointment.
Is FBC included in the Essential Health Check?
No — full blood count is included in our Advanced, Optimal and Cancer Marker checks, not Essential. If FBC is important to you, the Advanced Health Check at £155 is the most affordable package that includes it.
What does a full blood count include?
Our FBC includes 15 markers: Haemoglobin, Red Blood Count, HCT, MCV, MCH, MCHC, RDW, Platelets, MPV, White Cell Count, Neutrophils, Lymphocytes, Monocytes, Eosinophils and Basophils.
How quickly will I get my FBC results?
Your detailed blood test report is usually ready within 2–5 working days.
What if my FBC results are abnormal?
Your report will explain results in context and highlight markers outside the normal reference range. Many out-of-range FBC results are mild and resolve on repeat testing — for example, a recent infection can temporarily affect white cell counts. If medical follow-up is needed, we will recommend you speak to your GP.
Can I just book a full blood count on its own?
Yes — single tests start from £99, with specialist tests priced higher. Many patients choose a health check package instead for better value, since the package includes a broader blood panel and on-the-day clinical checks.
